How to Feed a Fussy Dog (and Break Bad Mealtime Habits)
Got a fussy eater on your hands? You’re not alone. Many dogs develop picky eating habits over time—often because we unintentionally teach them that if they wait long enough, something tastier might come along. Here’s a simple, vet-approved approach to help get your dog back on track and enjoying their meals without the fuss.
Step-by-Step Feeding Routine for Fussy Dogs
Meal 1 – Breakfast:
Serve your dog their usual portion of food in a clean bowl and give them 20 minutes to eat it. No coaxing, no adding extras—just leave the food and walk away.
If your dog doesn’t eat within that time, simply remove the bowl and place the food in a sealed container in the fridge. Do not offer any alternative food.
Meal 2 – Dinner:
At dinner time, take out any leftover food from breakfast and top it up with a fresh portion to make up the correct meal size. Offer the food the same way: bowl down, 20 minutes, no fuss.
Again, if the food isn’t eaten, remove it and refrigerate. Repeat the same process for up to three days.
Why This Works
This routine gently teaches your dog that mealtime isn’t a buffet with endless options. If they don’t eat what’s on offer, it disappears until the next scheduled meal. Over time, they’ll learn to eat promptly and stop holding out for something “better.”
And don’t worry—dogs can safely go without food for a day or two, so this method isn’t harmful. What it is, is effective. Most dogs catch on quickly when they realise the kitchen isn’t open 24/7.
Want to help your dog love their food again? Consistency is key. Stick to the plan and watch their habits change for the better—no more fuss, just clean bowls and happy tummies!
